    ILO Senior Labour Migration Specialist, Gloria Moreno-Fontes, speaks from Pretoria about the Southern Africa Migration Management (SAMM) Project, which aims to improve migration management in the Southern Africa and Indian Ocean region. The project is funded by the European Commission and implemented by the ILO in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

    The African Union, ILO and UNICEF organized a virtual Continental event to mark the World Day against Child Labour. The event brought together key actors, to discuss strategies to address child labour, taking a holistic and systemic approach based on the 2020 Global Estimates on Child Labour and related recommendations, which had been launched by the ILO and UNICEF on 10 June.

    COVID-19 exacerbated inequalities in a short time. Groups already marginalized ran the risk of being further left behind. The world of work response in Malawi was built around the SDG commitment of leaving no one behind. As part of the UN country team and in collaboration with the government, employers’ and workers’ organizations, the COVID-19 response in the world of work kept its focus on women and girls, people living with HIV, persons with disability and other groups in vulnerable situations.

  6. Improving the Workers’ Compensation System in Malawi

    Workers’ compensation in Malawi has faced challenges since its creation in 2000. This policy brief intends to propose 10 recommendations in making the workers compensation regime more efficient and effective. The Ombudsman’s 2018 report following an investigation into delays in processing of workers’ compensation claims provided the basis from which policy can be enhanced to address the pitfalls in the process. At the pinnacle of the recommendations is the fact that processing must be done by a Workers’ Compensation Commission that is well equipped and modernised with an established fund that is solely dedicated to processing of injury and/or death claims.

  7. Employment Injury Insurance: A way forward for Malawi's workforce

    In an effort to expand social security to Malawian workers and to overcome the numerous challenges of the country's workers compensation system, the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, with support from the ILO, is undertaking efforts to establish a more efficient and effective employment injury system that is in line with International Labour Standards on Social Security and Malawi's labour laws.
