    On Tuesday 14 June in the framework of a High-Level Conference organized by the ILO Office in Lisbon and the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security of Portugal, the International Labour Organization has signed a cooperation agreement with the Strategic and Planning Office of the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security of Portugal to implement the Phase 3 of the ACTION/Portugal project on “Strengthening of Social Protection Systems in the PALOP and Timor-Leste".

    Albania faces a growing need of long-term care for its elderly population

    According to a recent ILO study, at least 91 thousand elderly in Albania are in need of long-term care. Less than 2 percent of them are currently receiving formal long-term care services and most of them rely on family members, in particular unpaid female carers. With a rapidly ageing population and continual out-migration, Albania is facing an imminent challenge to ensure access to affordable and quality care services for all elderly in need.

    The recent ILO report says that the social protection system in Bosnia and Herzegovina is facing formidable challenges stemming from insufficient investment in closing the social protection gaps, inefficient resource allocation, and persistent inequalities, particularly in terms of gender. The COVID-19 pandemic has further underscored the critical importance of building a comprehensive and resilient social protection system.
