Viet Nam Prime Minister meets ILO Director-General

Key labour and employment issues discussed include Viet Nam’s continued commitment to ratifying international labour standards and cooperation with the ILO.

DAVOS (ILO News) - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Gilbert F. Houngbo on the sideline of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on 17 January. This was the second time they have met, the first being during the ILO Director-General's official visit to Viet Nam in June 2023.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed high appreciation for the ILO's role in promoting social justice and protecting workers' rights as well as in tackling global challenges such as social inequality and unemployment. The Prime Minister affirmed: "Viet Nam always values ​​cooperation with the ILO."

ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo shared that ILO “welcomes Viet Nam’s interest in adopting further ILO standards and the country’s strong engagement with the ILO”.

The two sides also discussed Viet Nam's support for the United Nations' Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions. The Prime Minister requested the ILO’s cooperation and support for Viet Nam in handling issues related to labour affected by the energy transition as well as training and reskilling for workers impacted by the green and digital transformation, ensuring workers’ benefits.
