ILO at the 14th Global Forum on Migration and Development Summit

The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) is the world’s largest informal, non-binding, voluntary and government-led process on migration. The 14th GFMD Summit, chaired by France focuses on the overarching theme "From environmental concerns to cultural aspects of migration: adopting an inclusive approach to meet the challenges and increases the opportunities for human mobility".

“Maximizing the social and economic opportunities of labour mobility for a just transition” (with the GFMD Business Mechanism and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation)


This event will focus on how migrant workers can support just transitions to green economies, ensuring fairness and inclusivity, effectively using migrant workers’ skills and ensuring the protection of their rights through the process. Discussions will focus on a vision of an inclusive, green future, and practical steps by different stakeholders to achieve this vision.

“Extending social protection to migrant workers in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries: Promising practices and avenues for reform” (Co-organized with the Executive Bureau of the Council of Ministers of Labour and Ministers of Social Affairs in Gulf Cooperation Council States, in partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Migrant Forum in Asia)

The event will provide a forum to discuss recent reform efforts to extend effective social protection of migrant workers in GCC countries followed by a multistakeholder panel discussion on promising practices and the recommendations on the way forward to engage countries across the migration corridor in a conversation on the pathways for the gradual extension of social security rights in line with international labour standards.
