As part of the 34th edition of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has engaged with the government of Côte d'Ivoire to conduct a campaign to raise awareness of the risks of exploitation and human trafficking related to the migration of young Ivorian footballers abroad. This campaign is part of the previous activities carried out by the ILO in partnership with the Didier Drogba Foundation and the International Federation of Professional Footballers' Associations (FIFPRO).

For many young people around the world, especially those from low-income social environments, professional sport represents an open door to economic and social advancement. Although inspiring role models exist, few manage to make their dreams come true.

Young footballers: all dreaming of becoming professionals

Despite this fierce competition, some still choose to leave their country in the hope of becoming a professional footballer abroad, despite the risks of forced labour and human trafficking, to which these young aspirants may be exposed. Despite their best efforts, many aspiring competitors have their dreams shattered by deceptions from fake agents.

The decision to migrate to pursue a professional career should be made with the highest caution, as it is imperative to gather all the necessary information to avoid abuse. It is essential for young footballers to inform themselves before they leave, thus ensuring that they are in contact with official agents, in order to avoid deception and false contracts. This vigilance will help ensure safe and regular migration, thus preserving their dreams from a tragic conclusion.
